About the School
The Academy of American Studies is a public high school located in Long Island City, Queens, New York. Founded in 1996, it was the first Gilder Lehrman-sponsored school in the United States, created through a partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the NYC Department of Education. The school serves around 1,200 students and focuses on a rigorous college preparatory curriculum with an emphasis on American history and its connections to various disciplines. The curriculum includes humanities, literature, writing, and a range of math and science courses. Students participate in discussions, debates, and collaborative projects, analyzing primary sources.
