About the School
The Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI) is the oldest and largest non-profit agency in the U.S. dedicated to serving LGBTQIA+ youth. Founded in 1979 in New York City, HMI provides a safe haven for young people aged 13 to 24, particularly focusing on youth of color. The organization offers a wide range of free services, including counseling, case management, health and wellness programs, education and career development, and recreational activities. HMI also engages in capacity building and advocacy, partnering with other organizations to create inclusive environments for LGBTQIA+ youth. They utilize tools like the PRYSM Scan to assess inclusivity and provide training on diversity and equity. Annually, HMI serves over 2,000 at-risk youth directly and impacts an additional 8,000 through outreach efforts. The institute is committed to empowering young people to live healthy, authentic lives while shaping policies that protect LGBTQIA+ rights.
