About the School
Kaufman Music Center is a vibrant non-profit cultural organization located in New York City's Upper West Side. Founded in 1952, it has grown from a community music school into a key institution dedicated to music education, performance, and community access. The Center serves over 4,000 students annually and welcomes more than 75,000 visitors to its events and facilities each year. The Center operates two main schools: the Lucy Moses School, which offers classes in music, dance, and theater for all ages, and the Special Music School, a K-12 public school for musically gifted children. It also features Merkin Concert Hall, an intimate venue that hosts a diverse range of performances, including classical music and contemporary works. Kaufman Music Center is committed to making arts education accessible to everyone, fostering creativity and participation in the arts across the community.
